Course Description
Welcome to your Sophomore English class! This 9-weeks we will begin learning about Social Satire and Romanticism. This unit offers an interesting mix of literature (including a novel, short stories, and poetry), works of art, non-fiction informational pieces, and editorial writing. Within the time we spend studying these texts, you will be introduced to literary analysis and argument. You will also learn to apply the concepts and themes raise in the various works to the modern world. Literature is often a criticism of the time period in which it was written, so this unit will teach you how to think critically.
The major work we will read this 9-weeks is the modern novel Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. This short work of fiction will bring together many of the introductory skills you will have learned into a culminating experience. You will learn to find not just WHAT the author says to us, but WHY he tells his story. Along with this you will learn to prove your analysis with textual evidence, discuss the works and their meanings, and communicate your ideas on censorship, satire, freedom of thought and expression, the power and responsibility that comes with knowledge, equality, and the power of technology.
