Course Description
Senior English at GHS emphasizes reading, writing, research, and speaking skills to prepare students for their college English courses. Success depends in large part on the active participation of each class member in daily work and in class discussion. Obviously, if students are not prepared, and do not participate, they will not develop the skills necessary to be successful in Senior English and beyond. All students are expected to read assignments before class and come to class prepared to give 100 percent. This course offers opportunities to improve reading, writing, speaking/listening, and critical thinking skills through the study of literary selections from British/English writers organized chronologically or thematically. It emphasizes developing control in expository writing and moving toward precision in personal narrative, descriptive, and persuasive writing. It refines research skills, and it integrates grammar, mechanics, and usage into the writing process. The Senior Project is a required element of the course and includes a research paper, a portfolio, a product, and an oral presentation.
The focus of this course is on the British Literary tradition which emphasizes the historical pieces of literature back to the Anglo Saxon period and Beowulf, through the Medieval period and Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, to the Renaissance and Shakespeare's Macbeth, through the Romantics with works such as Frankenstein and Pride and Prejudice. Time remaining will be spent on Modernists.
