Sophomore Literature Assignments

Department
English Language Arts
Description
Welcome!

Tenth grade English emphasizes learning to think critically and analyze literature for rhetorical and persuasive technique. This year you will learn to develop your own persuasive technique as you build these skills. That means you must read and write in order to learn and then implement the skills yourself!  Your success depends in large part on the active participation in daily work and in class discussion. Obviously, if you are not prepared, and do not participate, you will not develop the skills necessary to be successful in sophomore English and beyond.

All students are expected to read assignments before class and come to class prepared to give 100 percent. This course will focus on close reading of literary and informational texts as well as the study of rhetoric and persuasion through thematically connected speeches, film, and other editorial content.  Writing will give most attention to argumentative and informative/explanatory writing and literary explication.

Other content will include academic and domain-specific vocabulary lists to build reading comprehension for higher level academics and the SAT and ACT.  The course will also promote speaking and listening skills through class discussions and presentations.

This may not sound too fun, but it really is a fun year for English!  I promise, you will find something you like about this class!  Welcome back to school sophomores!
