Course Description:

This course is designed to offer students (upperclassmen) the opportunity to become effective and efficient multi-skilled healthcare providers as they develop a working knowledge of various allied health opportunities. Students focusing on a career path in the healthcare field may apply classroom/lab knowledge and skills in the clinical setting as they participate in direct or simulated client care. The curriculum allows instructors to provide options for classroom/student growth opportunities in area(s) of interest to the student. These options may be determined by community need, available resources, and/or student interest, etc. This course was developed according to a basic 50-minute class time frame, but may be adjusted according to local system schedules. Instructors may select which classroom content standards 1-14 best meet his/her individual classroom needs in addition to the required clinical/capstone project to equal total class time available for the course.  


Course Goals:

  1. Develop the basic skills and knowledge necessary to apply the principles and competencies performed in the healthcare industry.
  2. Develop the ability to perform skills that are associated with the required competencies of the healthcare industry.
  3. Master the Certified Medical Assistant content and skills required for the certification test. Additional testing information will be shared at a later date. CMA testing will take place in the Spring Semester.
  4. Develop attitudes consistent with those expected of an individual working in the healthcare industry and society in general.

Course Standards:

Course Standard 1 HS-AHM-1 Demonstrate employability skills required by business and industry.

Course Standard 2 HS-AHM-2 Research advanced technical skills in respiratory care. Respiratory Services

Course Standard 3 HS-AHM-3 Analyze advanced technical skills within the imaging services field. Imaging Services

Course Standard 4 HS-AHM-4 Research advanced technical skills in the surgical services field to include nutrition and fluid intake, elimination, and ostomy and wound care. Surgical services

Course Standard HS-AHM-5 Perform advanced technical skills within rehabilitation services. Rehabilitation Services

Course Standard 6 HS-AHM-6 Perform advanced technical skills within pharmaceuticals. Pharmacy Services

Course Standard 7 HS-AHM-7 Perform advanced technical skills within dietary services. Dietary Services Course Standard 8 HS-AHM-8 Research the field of Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) to include, but not limited to, such practices as chiropractic care, acupuncture, reflexology, massage therapy, homeopathic medicine, aromatherapy, and stress reduction techniques. Course Standard 9 HS-AHM-9 Perform advanced technical skills within mental health services. Mental Health Services 

Course Standard 10 HS-AHM-10 Research public health services and epidemiology, utilizing www.cdc.gov as the primary source. Public Health and Epidemiology

Course Standard 11 HS-AHM- Perform advanced technical skills within medical office services. Medical Office Assistant 

Course Standard 12 HS-AHM-12 Perform advanced technical skills within medical laboratory services using simulated equipment based on school, county, and facility protocol. Medical Laboratory Services

Course Standard 13 HS-AHM-13 Perform advanced technical skills within cardiology services. Cardiology Services

Course Standard 14 HS-AHM-14 Perform advanced technical skills within emergency services. Emergency Services

Course Standard 15 HS-AHM-15 Perform advanced technical skills within dentistry services.


Instructional Resources:

A variety of instructional methods are used that include group assignments, discussion, role playing, hands on activities, guest speakers, audiovisual presentation, anatomical models, notebooks, computer technology assignments, and projects.


Textbooks: Medical Assisting: Administrative & Clinical Competencies; Blesi; 8th Ed.


Evaluation:

Methods used in assessing and evaluating students in this course include: written response, oral response, quizzes, tests, teacher observation, performance assessments, and student participation. To pass the course, you must earn a 70.

Additional clinical requirements such as uniforms, immunizations and all other requirements will be listed and sent home on a separate form at a later date.    


Absences / Tardies:

Excellent, prompt attendance is vital to your success in this course. It is the responsibility of the student to make arrangements for any missed work and to complete it within the specified time limit set by school policy.


Classroom Routine:           

  1. Student must be seated in his/her assigned seat when the tardy bell rings, with your paper, pen, pencil, notebook/computer/tablet/etc.
  2. Student begins / completes assigned induction for the day.
  3. All assignments must be turned in the day they are due. Points will be deducted per school and CTAE department policy.
  4. Student must remain seated at his/her desk until the bell rings. 
  5. Student must clean up his/her desk or lab area before leaving the classroom. Please don’t leave a mess!!! 
  6. In the absence of the instructor, a current or emergency lesson plan will be available for the substitute. Remind may be used to inform students of lesson plan.
  7. Students will use personal technology devices only for class related activities during class. 


Employability Skills:

This class will be operated similar to the way a healthcare facility or other type business may operate. Work ethic skills are extremely important in any work setting and are crucial in the healthcare industry. Each student will be observed throughout the year for “employability skills”. Employability will be assessed by your instructor on a regular basis, as well as randomly when needed.  You will start out with 100 points as your employability grade each week. You will lose points if found in violation of one of the safety, classroom, or work ethic rules. Poor employees lose points and may not keep their job (or in your case, you can lose the ability to choose your clinical sites or attend clinical rotations, etc.). 

Examples of some actions that would cause one to lose points:

  1. Abusing equipment – 20 points
  2. Being in lab area without permission – 10 points
  3. Not performing duty assignments – 10 points
  4. Unauthorized cell phone use– 20 points
  5. Dress code/ID violations – 20 points
  6. Any unprofessional/unacceptable behavior while in clinical setting - 20 points 

Evaluation: Will follow new county policy

Summative Assessments (Tests, Lab Evaluations, Major Assignments): 60%

Other Assessments (Quizzes, Daily Work, Labs, Employability, Participation): 40%   

 

You represent the Healthcare Science Technology Education Program at Greenbrier High School. Your actions outside this classroom must be appropriate.  Any misconduct will be handled in accordance with Columbia County’s code of conduct policies including dismissal from the program. The instructor reserves the right to change or modify the syllabus as deemed necessary with appropriate notification.
