Learn From Home - Sophomore English Assignments

Instructor
Teacher Jennifer Lowery
Term
2020-21 1st Semester
Department
English Language Arts
Description
Welcome to GHS Sophomore English!  Even if you choose to learn from home, you are still PART OF THE PACK!  We will be working on very similar activities to learn the standards of sophomore English, but with an online only twist.

This 9-weeks we will begin learning about Social Satire and Romanticism.  This unit offers an interesting mix of literature (including a novel, short stories, and poetry), works of art, non-fiction informational pieces, and editorial writing.  Within the time we spend studying these texts, you will be introduced to literary analysis and argument.  You will also learn to apply the concepts and themes raise in the various works to the modern world.  Literature is often a criticism of the time period in which it was written, so this unit will teach you how to think critically.

The major work we will read this 9-weeks is the modern novel Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury.  This short work of fiction will bring together many of the introductory skills you will have learned into a culminating experience.  You will learn to find not just WHAT the author says to us, but WHY he tells his story.  Along with this you will learn to prove your analysis with textual evidence, discuss the works and their meanings, and communicate your ideas on censorship, satire, freedom of thought and expression, the power and responsibility that comes with knowledge, equality, and the power of technology.

We will also learn about writing, conventions of standard English, and vocabulary this term.

Quote Blending

Today you will view my screencast videos on how to blend quotes into your writing.  This is a skill that is extremely important in good academic writing.  Watch the videos today, posted in Google Classroom, and work on trying to do it yourself with the quotes provided on the posted worksheet.  This is due tomorrow so that we can go over it, and I can reteach anything you don't understand.

Email Etiquette - Technical Writing Lesson

Look at the attached graphic.  This graphic shows the proper etiquette for emailing your teacher.  Follow these guidelines, and send me an introductory email.  It should include a subject, greeting, a proper signature using your name, and information I should know about you.  Tell me anything you want! You may want to include interests, hobbies, anything about your goals, what grade you would like to get, and what you think will be difficult or challenging about Learn from Home English, or anything you think you will enjoy about Learn From Home school.  The body information is optional, but it should be at least a paragraph long before you close.

Edit!  and hit send when you are ready to submit this for a grade.  The rubric is posted in Google Classroom.  This is due Friday the 14th.
